Alfa Romeo is an Italian luxury carmaker whose comparatively attainable products give off the vibe of a much more expensive exotic. It’s a division of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles conglomerate, but its three models — the Giulia sedan, Stelvio crossover, and 4C sports car — use their own performance-focused rear-wheel-drive platforms, distinct from the company’s other vehicles. The company dates all the way back to 1910, but Alfa Romeos have been sold in the U.S. for only a fraction of its lifespan: from the 1950s to the 1990s, and then from 2014 to the present.
In an era when competing European luxury brands have inched away from visceral driving dynamics in favor of a more coddling, tech-focused experience, Alfa Romeo’s current models are enthusiast-oriented throwbacks. Each offers a more direct connection between the driver and the road, and while there are plenty of luxury features, that’s secondary to their pursuit of driving pleasure and high performance capabilities.
The 4C is offered only in one trim level, but the Stelvio and Giulia have a choice of models, most using a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Trim levels include a base model, then Sport, Ti, Ti, Ti Lusso (Italian for luxury), and Ti Sport. For maximum performance, upgrade to the V6-powered and sportier-handling Quadrifoglio.
