Hyundai Motor Company dates back to 1967 when it was founded to produce cars in Korea in cooperation with the Ford Motor Company. But it wasn't until almost 20 years later, in 1986, that Hyundai began to sell cars in the United States. Even then it was dependent on others for much of its powertrain engineering. After a big splash in the U.S. based on the compellingly low prices of its vehicles, quality problems caused its sales to crater. But instead of giving up, Hyundai reinvented itself and its processes to the point where it has become one of the world's highest-quality automakers. The brand has also established a well-regarded design operation in California that has enabled it to style vehicles that appeal to American tastes.
Once a marketer of small, inexpensive hatchbacks, Hyundai has now broadened its horizons to offer a wide lineup of sedans, coupes, hatchbacks, and crossover SUVs. One of its most recently added vehicles is the Santa Cruz small pickup, a sports activity vehicle. Hyundai has also been actively adding hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery-electric models to its portfolio. The Ioniq 5 crossover is one of the most praised of the recent battery-electric vehicle offerings. More battery-electric vehicles are on the way, all to bear the Ioniq sub-brand. Hyundai crossover SUVs that include the Santa Fe, Tucson, and Palisade are extremely popular and filled with value.
