Jeep got its start with the go-anywhere military vehicles of World War II, and the modern brand will never let you forget it. Although the Jeep brand has changed owners repeatedly over the years (it’s now part of the Italian-American Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), off-road capabilities and a seven-slotted grille are always part of the story.
The Jeep Wrangler is an uncommonly pure connection to the 1941 Army jeeps. This isn’t a retro homage, but a vehicle that has never strayed from its origin. A modern Wrangler can still tackle ridiculous off-road challenges, it’s still an open-top convertible, it’s still available with just two doors and a manual transmission (though most buyers prefer the practicality of the four-door Unlimited version and an automatic transmission), and it remains instantly recognizable. You get modern safety and infotainment technology, sure, and a smoother ride than before — but this vehicle still bursts with character and capability. This carries over to the new Wrangler-based Gladiator pickup truck.
The rest of the Jeep lineup hews closer to the modern crossover/SUV norm, all with seating for five passengers and pleasant on-road driving manners. But they all bring more capability and personality than t,he competition. From the spunky pint-sized Renegade, to the more elegant and reserved Compass and Cherokee, to the powerful and luxurious mid-size Grand Cherokee, no Jeep is quite the same as other vehicles — especially off-road.
Jeeps offer a d,izzying array of trim levels, including special editions that come and go each year. Most models have a general core to their lineup, though: a base Sport model, a mid-level Latitude and Altitude, a luxurious Limited, and an off-road-focused Trailhawk. The Wrangler and Gladiator’s maximum-capability model is called the Rubicon, and the Grand Cherokee has SRT and Trackhawk models that maximize on-road perform, ance, plus luxurious Overland and Summit grades.
