It’s right there in the name: Mini. A petite size defines the Mini brand, along with the agile handling associated with small, light vehicles, plus a retro British design hearkening back to the original Mini vehicle that was a groundbreaking small car when it debuted in 1959. But there’s a lot more to modern Minis, which have become tiny luxury cars as much as performance machines. Mini was resurrected as a division of German luxury carmaker BMW in 2002, and the latest Minis share more of BMW’s sophistication — and relatively high price tag — than ever before.
A three-door hatchback has always been the iconic Mini vehicle, and Mini still sells one that’s called the Hardtop 2-Door. But most of today’s sales volume comes from larger hatchbacks, wagons, and crossovers that bring additional interior space and the user-friendliness of four passenger doors. Its best-seller is the biggest Mini: the Countryman crossover, which is essentially a retro-styled variant of the BMW X1. But driving pleasure remains a Mini staple, thanks to zesty engines, sharp steering responses, and widely available manual transmissions. And small, light cars also tend to return good gas mileage, which Mini accentuates with an available plug-in hybrid version of the Countryman and an upcoming all-electric version of the Hardtop 2-Door
Nearly every Mini model is available in a choice of variants that include the base Cooper, more powerful Cooper S, and the max-performance John Cooper Works (named for the m,an who first added larger engines to the original Mini). Having picked a performance level, buyers can choose among base Classic, mid-level Signature, and fully loaded Iconic. Minis offer further degrees of customization, including a famously diverse array of aesthetic add-ons like painted British flags. ,
