Mitsubishi is a Japanese carmaker that’s been selling vehicles in the U.S. for close to four decades. Mitsubishi also offers one of the smallest, least expensive, and — aside from hybrids and electric vehicles — most fuel-efficient cars sold in the U.S.: the Mirage five-door hatchback and its Mirage G4 sedan variant. And another unique option is a plug-in hybrid version of the brand’s largest SUV, the still-compact Outlander.
The most common trim levels on modern Mitsubishis are the base ES, midlevel SE and LE, and the top-of-the-line GT — which also brings a larger engine on the Outlander Sport and Outlander crossovers.

The Eclipse Cross does battle with various other compact SUVs and crossovers, such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CR-V. The Eclipse Cross undercuts both rivals on price while offering a stronger styling and a better powertrain warranty. The Eclipse Cross also uses relatively nice materials on the interior and offers some fairly uncommon options for the segment, such as heated rear seats. Against these, the Outlander offers a comparable exterior but manages to pack seating for more people inside. Interior space and fuel efficiency are both big strengths. Mitsubishi also says that the Outlander is one of the most fuel-efficient utility vehicles offered in the North American market with standard 7-passenger seating (it gets an EPA estimated 30 mpg highway).

The Outlander PHEV can tow 1500 pounds, which should be plenty for a small boat or a couple of jet skis. Ground clearance for the Outlander is 7.8 inches, which should give it an easier time with snow than some other crossovers.
